Something I am Proud Of:

IMG_3070_edited.jpg

When I was growing up the big "STEM" was just getting it's footing in K-12 education. At that time, it was mainly encouraged for the boys, not the girls. I was just about 18 the first time I learned about engineering in the context of something I could pursue. I recall times where my male classmates had different activities to encourage STEM. I also recall being upset because their activities were more interesting. When I was a senior in college and on the board for the Society of Women Engineers (SWE) I decided to create an event geared just towards the girls, aimed to introduce them to STEM.

During this  full day experience, almost 250 girl scouts from NYC and surrounding areas cycled through workshops in Mechanical, Civil, Environmental, Electrical, and Chemical Engineering as well as Computer Science and general sciences. We had 100 volunteers from each discipline leading the workshops alongside student volunteers from the school of education.  I was incredibly proud of all the work my lead coordinator, Megan (pictured right) and I did to pull this together in just 3 months.

I wanted to create an opportunity for these girls that didn't exist when I was a kid and I am so proud to say that despite a significantly scale down due to Covid, the Manhattan College chapter of SWE still holds this event annually!
